When the bag was filled, a special student was selected to bring the bag to the multi-purpose room and deposit its contents into the community bins. At the end of the 6 weeks, the classroom that brought in the most items was rewarded with a pizza party. Students decorated their bags and made posters to put up all around the school. Liberty’s students took pride in their efforts, and it showed.
Principal Cheryl Foertsch, who decided the year’s theme would be “going green”, made almost daily announcements over the P.A. system reminding students to keep collecting items. Fliers went out with each student at the beginning of the 6 weeks, halfway through the drive, and then again near the end. Jennifer Farley, the school’s dedicated parent contact, sent a press release from the CFK website to local media sources, and the results were phenomenal.
Liberty plans to use the funds they raised to continue going green, by installing hand dryers in the restrooms, and providing desk lights for teachers to prevent wasting energy.
Liberty School is a shining example of how a little extra effort can go a long way. Dedication, visibility and teamwork were the foundation for success at Liberty School, and they have proved that the sky is the limit!
