"The Sky's the Limit! "

Liberty Elementary signed up with the Cartridges for Kids program in February of 2009, knowing that they would hold a collection contest for Earth Day and to kick off their program. No one knew just how well their students, parents and community would respond.

6 weeks later on April 22nd –Earth Day – the winners were announced. Liberty School had collected nearly $750 worth of electronics, over 190 cell phones, and had met and exceeded their drive goal, earning them a $50 bonus and putting their total earnings at almost $800 – in just 6 weeks.

You might be thinking, “They must have thousands of students!” – they don’t. “They must be an incredibly affluent school!” – They’re not. They are however, dedicated to being green and saving our planet.

The contest began with a timeline, a map of the weeks to come. Each step was carefully planned and executed, from the hanging of the first poster, to follow-up with the media after the results had been calculated. In the beginning each classroom received a paper bag and a tally sheet with a list of the items CFK collects. Each time a student brought an item, it was marked on the tally sheet.

When the bag was filled, a special student was selected to bring the bag to the multi-purpose room and deposit its contents into the community bins. At the end of the 6 weeks, the classroom that brought in the most items was rewarded with a pizza party. Students decorated their bags and made posters to put up all around the school. Liberty’s students took pride in their efforts, and it showed.

Principal Cheryl Foertsch, who decided the year’s theme would be “going green”, made almost daily announcements over the P.A. system reminding students to keep collecting items. Fliers went out with each student at the beginning of the 6 weeks, halfway through the drive, and then again near the end. Jennifer Farley, the school’s dedicated parent contact, sent a press release from the CFK website to local media sources, and the results were phenomenal.

Liberty plans to use the funds they raised to continue going green, by installing hand dryers in the restrooms, and providing desk lights for teachers to prevent wasting energy.

Liberty School is a shining example of how a little extra effort can go a long way. Dedication, visibility and teamwork were the foundation for success at Liberty School, and they have proved that the sky is the limit!
